Welcome to my Nightmares

The gapers are traditional Dutch pharmacy signs, that can still be seen sometimes on old buildings. There are several variants. The most popular depicts a Moor’s head with an open mouth, holding a pill on his tongue. The Moor used to symbolize the exotic origin of the ingredients used for medicines. The Moor’s image can be replaced by a jester or a man in uniform (fireman, policeman, etc.).The Zuiderzee Museum in Enkhuizen has probably the largest collection of such heads in the country, and it’s quite striking to see them lined on shelves in a single room. A perfect setup for a horror movie : )
